Set in North Dakota, on an Ojibwe reservation, the protagonist of the novel is LaRose Iron, a young Native American boy. His father accidentally shoots LaRose's best friend as well as his neighbor in a hunting accident, when the deer targeted suddenly moves from in front of the boy.

Louise Erdrich is an American writer of Chippewa and German descent. She won the Pulitzer Prize in 2021 in the Fiction category for the book The Night Watchman.
