The author narrates in depth the lives of three women of different generations affected by Virginia Woolf's novel, Mrs. Dalloway: Woolf herself, in the midst of writing Mrs. Dalloway, Laura, a young mother suffering in the boundaries of his life, and Clarissa, who is giving a party in New York for her best friend, a writer dying of AIDS.

Michael Cunningham is an American writer, screenwriter, professor and poet, known for the novels A Home at the End of the World, Flesh and Bone and The Hours, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1999.
